Abstract
In December 2015 The National Gallery of Australia (NGA) heralded its exhibition of the work of Tom Roberts as being ‘among the nation’s best known works of art’, ‘loved by all Australians’. This was at a time when we had just started work on the data produced by a survey of Australian cultural practices which, among other things, asked the respondents whether they had heard of, seen, and liked (or not) the work of ten Australian artists. Roberts was one of these artists and we were able to show, in an opinion piece contributed to The Conversation (Bennett 2015), that far from being ‘loved by all Australians,’ 63 per cent of our main sample had never heard of Roberts.
