    Abstract

The principal message of this book is the key importance to bi/multi-lingual children's lives of the use of their heritage/home language for learning in early childhood education. A central theme is that the multiple languages that children and their families bring to early childhood settings can be fostered and validated through intentional planning and innovative pedagogies, practices and policies. The metaphor used as the title of this book skilfully draws our attention to the uncharted waters in early childhood education where many children in Aotearoa New Zealand from bi/multilingual backgrounds learn through their languages in plurilingual contexts. The book's unique focus on children from birth to 5 years is a significant contribution to the field of early childhood education as the emphasis is placed on young children's learning experiences in more than one language.
