Abstract

They were great not just in terms of their vocal prowess but because each of these singers left a unique legacy of recordings and songs. Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday were arguably the two greatest vocal stylists jazz has produced. Edith Piaf's voice was one of the most emotion-filled of the the 20th century. Ewan MacColl's glorious baritone is less well-known than his songs, which include Dirty Old Town and First Time Ever I Saw Your Face. But Bob Copper? In a way, you could argue that his achievement was the greatest of all. Listen and learn as Kate Fagan, Phillip Sametz and Maria Lurighi discuss these singing legends of the 20th Century.
