Abstract
Malaysia and Thailand are trading nations and see the world as their markets. The Uruguay round of trade negotiations under the auspices of the World Trade Organization (WTO) continue to be delayed. From the many potential approaches to engaging with international markets the favored tool is to negotiate bilateral and plurilateral free-trade agreements between trading partners. These are much easier to negotiate than the multilateral agreements under the WTO where consensus is required between all members" a very difficult task. This paper traces the development of FTAs in both countries and contrasts the breadth of coverage of their FTAs. It will be seen that Malaysia has been much more proactive in opening its services and financial sectors than has Thailand. This may be related to their level of and may also be related to the type of political development as well.
