Abstract

The probability weighted moments algorithm proposed by Landwehr et al. for estimating the parameters of the Wakeby distribution requires an a priori ability to decide whether the lower bound of the distribution is zero or not. In this paper an optimization approach is suggested as a possible alternative to avoid the a priori guesses on the lower bound. Both the approaches are compared with the results of other widely used probability distributions for low flows namely log Pearson, Gumbel, and Weibull.
