Abstract

Fiji is a small island republic situated in the south-west of the Pacific Ocean, an archipelago with 322 islands out of which 106 are inhabited. It has two main islands—Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Viti Levu is the largest island among the group of islands with an area of 10,388 sq. km. and accommodates approximately 70 per cent of Fiji’s population. Fiji is approximately 2,797 km. north-east of Sydney, Australia and 1,848 km north of Auckland, New Zealand. Suva, the capital and the largest city, is located in south-east of Viti Levu. Lautoka is the second largest city which lies on the western side of Viti Levu and 24 km south of the Nadi International Airport. The second largest island, Vanua Levu, has an area of 5,538 sq. km and north-west of the island is Labasa, its largest and main town. To the south-east of Vanua Levu lies Savusavu, a relatively smaller town, but a popular local and international tourist destination.
