Abstract
In this chapter we present a case study of community capacity building informed by current experiences of designing, working in and researching a literacy-focused early childhood education project in poor communities in the Antofagasta region of northern Chile. Our focus is on strategies and frameworks for effectively mobilising change in pedagogical practices for literacy teaching and learning. The conceptualisation of the project reported in this chapter is informed by international research evidence about the important role of strong literacy knowledge as a foundation for children’s successful achievement in school, as well as evidence from the successful implementation in Australia of the Literacies, Communities and Under 5s project (Jones Diaz et al. 2001).
