Gayborhoods

Abstract

Gayborhood is a term used to describe a neighborhood populated by and associated with LGBTQ+ people and communities. Arguably, the term is most commonly used in North America, and is equivalent to descriptions deployed in other places, including gay ghetto, gay village, or simply a gay and/or lesbian neighborhood. A neighborhood can be understood to be a gayborhood if it (a) contains a cluster of LGBTQ institutions, both commercial (bars, clubs, cafes, bookstores, shops) and service-oriented (legal, health, and community organizations); (b) houses a substantial residential LGBTQ population; and (c) has conspicuous, locally dominant LGBTQ subculture(s). The LGBTQ presence is sufficiently embedded and visible in society that gayborhoods have mainstream recognition.
