Abstract
This chapter underlines the association between gender and religion. The main focus here is given to the market employment of women in the Islamic context. The chapter starts with a literature review highlighting the status of Muslim women from a socio-economic and demographic perspective. Then, it contrasts two major approaches explaining gender outcomes in the Islamic context. Finally, using the major results of a quantitative analaysis, this chapter provides empirical evidence to examine the association between religion and gender in the Muslim world.
