Abstract
This chapter explores understandings and perceptions of gender and how gender identity is formed in the early years of life. Gender diverse and transgender children are increasingly visible, including in early childhood education and in other professions that support children and their families. The socio-political context is rarely conducive to supporting professionals and institutions to affirm children who are gender diverse, despite this being fundamental to their health and wellbeing. As a result, it is imperative that those working with young children and their families, across a range of settings, have a greater understanding of gender identity and the inequities that can be experienced if transgressing gender norms. This chapter aims to provide this understanding and point to resources available.
