Abstract
Among rare photographs of Nasser al-Din Shah's court (the court, the royal harem), and also those from private quarters of aristocratic families, time to time we are confronting the visual representations of female African slaves. Obviously these female African slaves were not the main protagonists of such photographs and one should search for them in very end and hidden corners of photographs. They are depicted while dressing different from the women of harem and noble families, with simple and modest white cloths and scarfs. Based on these photographs, one can guess that they are included to the images to show the wealth and richness of their owners and masters. But in reality many of female African slaves of Qajar court and also those of aristocratic families were powerful in their own quarters. One of the most important female African slaves of the Nasser al-Din Shah's court was Golchehreh which in this article we will present her based on rare photographs of her taken probably by the king.
