Abstract

Sodium aurothiomalate and auranofin are gold complexes which have activity in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Several other gold complexes, such as aurothioglucose and gold thiosulphate, have been used in the past but are no longer available. They are in a general class of drugs termed conventional synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (csDMARDs). The gold complexes are also included in the general group, slow-acting antirheumatic drugs (SAARDs), because their full clinical effects are produced slowly
