Groundwater in Australia : understanding the challenges of its sustainable use

Research output: Chapter in Book / Conference PaperChapter

Abstract

Groundwater is an important component of the hydrologic cycle, and its sustainability is influenced by its interaction with surface water, ecosystems, and people. It is a critical resource globally for food production, ecosystem services, and domestic and industrial water supplies, but the depletion of groundwater has the potential to result in significant interruption of societal and ecological functions. Groundwater being an invisible and common pool resource creates additional management and sustainability challenges and can cause conflict among different users and stakeholders. Groundwater is also emerging as a critical issue for cities and towns in Australia and other parts of the world. The global groundwater challenge we now face is not about developing the resource but its sustainable management (Shah et al., 2000; Fienen and Arshad, 2016; Mukherjee et al., 2020).
