    Abstract

![CDATA[The increased demand for hospital services constitutes a significant problem. It can be problematic for hospital staff charged with managing limited resources (2002, p. 1), as well as patients who need health care (Laberge, Bernard, & Lamarche, 1997; Mahmud, Fong, Fahmy, Tanguay, & Aprikian, 2006; Rudkin, et al., 1996; Steinau, Haese, & Schumpelick, 1996; Thompson, 1999). To address this problem, some health services have adopted innovative approaches from other fields, including operations management, simulation and visual analytics (Clague, et al., 1997; Hashimoto & Bell, 1996; Stahl, et al., 2003). Despite the apparent value of these approaches, there is little research to guide the diffusion of innovation in health services settings. This paper helps to address this void.]]
