Abstract
During the 1990s the term 'transnationalism' gained extensive currency as a way of re-conceptualising migration and the incorporation of immigrants. It has been defined in several related ways. It is sometimes used to refer to specific activities associated with immigrant behaviours, including short-term visits to countries of origin, remittances of monies, correspondence, as well as the consumption of cultural products from societies of origin and involvement in migrant community events (Basch et al. 1994).
