Abstract

In recent years, engineering professionals around the globe have faced new challenges in designing, constructing, and maintaining durable transportation infrastructures. This is partly due to the lack of innovative materials and technologies that can withstand the extreme weather events witnessed in recent years, as well as the ever-increasing loads on our transportation networks. New design tools and construction technologies, coupled with novel materials, offer unique opportunities for geotechnical engineers to solve aforementioned challenging issues regarding transportation infrastructure, including slopes and embankments, foundations, highways, bridges, and railways.
