    Abstract

This chapter addresses, from a particular angle, the core set of problems raised by What is the Human? Is there a problem facing humanity today that can be located via the Humanities, that set of intellectual disciplines concerned with the condition of being human? If so, what is it, and how might we address it? Shakespeare and his Hamlet provide a point of departure for these broad reflections on these questions. Can literary works and their study become part of the solution as well as the problem of the ‘crisis of the Humanities’? Can they contribute today to the perennial task of better understanding the world and humans in it?
