Abstract
We discuss the basic principles of health promotion and theoretical models underpinning health promotion approaches, before examining the five Ottawa Charter for Health priority action areas. We explore these five areas-developing personal skills, strengthening community action, creating supportive environments, re-orienting healthcare services towards prevention of illness and promotion of health, and building healthy public policy-using obesity as a focus.
