Research output: Book/Research ReportResearch report

Abstract

The report was commissioned to evaluate the feasibility of designing and fabricating Helmet-Integrated RFID Antenna Design for Tactical Communication Applications. A comprehensive literature review of wearable antennas, their operating frequency, radiation pattern, gain and other relevant performance parameters is conducted. After careful examination of the performance of wearable antennas and literature available, design considerations and challenges for wearable antennas are outlined in the report. These act as a guideline for designing an application specific helmet-mount antenna that can achieve required performance characteristics. Further investigation was carried out to identify existing helmet-mount antennas and possible gaps in research and design challenges by evaluating patents. Effects of a ballistic helmet on antenna performance was also examined. Properties of material used in manufacturing helmet used by Defence, rescue operations and cyclist are studied to determine suitable dielectric material for antenna design. Preliminary design and performance evaluation of a rectangular microstrip patch antenna is performed. The report evaluates existing wearable and helmet mount antennas and concludes that it would be ideal to carry out further design and development studies in helmet-integrated antennas.
