Abstract
Singer, songwriter, painter, collaborator - Canadian Joni Mitchell is a wearer of many hats, including being one of the most influential female artists in the last 50 years. She developed a distinctive sound as she explored more harmonically and rhythmically complex styles, incorporated jazz, classical and R&B, working with the likes of Charles Mingus, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. One person she inspired is musician and academic Kate Fagan, who says it's hard to call Joni's music rock, or folk, or jazz, or pop, or poetry - "it's something of all of those." Kate comes in to The Music Show to show us how Joni became "one of the great character songwriters of the late 20th century."
