Abstract

The effects of Hg2+ solution of different concentrations on garlic were studied. With the increase of Hg2+ concentration or treatment time, the rate of root growth decreased successively or stopped, the mitosis index of root tip cells reduced, the number of anomalous dividing cells rose, soluble protein and sugar decreased, the content of chlorophyll reduced too, what's more, the contents of chlorophyll a decreased faster than the content of chlorophyll b, the activity of peroxidase increased under the treatment with low concentration of Hg2+ in short peroid, but decreased with high concentration of Hg2+ or with time's going on. Hg2+ pollution had very toxic influence on garlic.
