Abstract
Religion and popular culture coexist intimately, and cannot be seen as a simple relation of cause and effect. Sometimes religion creates and regulates popular culture. Indeed, religious figures who express themselves in popular culture, are also involved in shaping popular culture, and thereby make possible some experiences and deny access to others. They may take the form of using popular culture to return to their religion, or they may take the form of censor through certain narratives. Other times, popular culture can shape the form and content of religion. Some people seem to practice religion/spirituality creatively through the culture of contemporary media - such as: pictures, stories and songs, cable television networks, radio, fiction - to continue the meaning offered by religious institutions.
