    Abstract

![CDATA[Although the promotion of a positive academic self-concept is regarded as an important educational objective, research has consistently demonstrated that in academically selective settings, students have lower academic self-concepts than those students of equal aptitude who are educated in non-selective settings (Marsh, Kong, & Hau, 2000; Marsh & Parker, 1984). Known as the big-fish-little-pond effect (BFLPE), this effect has been demonstrated to be cross-culturally valid and extremely robust (Marsh & Hau, 2003; Marsh, Koller, & Baumert, 2001; Zeidner and Schleyer, 1998). However, cross-cultural research has been limited due to its reliance on analyses mainly based on Western countries. Using the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) database (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, OECD, 2005), the current study provided stronger support for the BFLPE’s validity and universal applicability, by demonstrating that the BFLPE extends to collectivist countries. Implications for educaional policy were discussed.]]
