How motherhood changes life - A discourse analytic study with mothers of young children

Thirteen mothers with an eldest child aged between 1 and 3 years were interviewed on a one-to-one basis about motherhood, using semi-structured interviews. A discourse analytic technique identified six major themes around the subject of changes caused by motherhood. Societal myths were implicated for giving a false impression of motherhood which, combined with the overwhelming demands of childcare, led to disillusionment and a sense of lost identity. The women used a variety of discursive techniques to resolve these dilemmas. Further study on this issue is necessary, but it is suggested that the absence of such techniques of resolution to the predicaments of motherhood might be one cause of unhappiness in mothers of young children.
