    Abstract

Mount Stromlo Observatory was a product of the British Empire. It was founded at a time when Australia had strong social, cultural and intellectual links with Britain. Appointments to senior positions in the public service, universities and scientific institutions were recommended or endorsed by the Colonial Office in London or by members of Britain’s scientific elite. The governor general, as the Queen’s representative in Australia, acted as a gatekeeper for links with Britain.
