Abstract
The rise and fall of public elocutionary recitation in Australia is traced and by doing so it takes recitation to refer to the memorisation and public performance including the work of high literary authors’ especially popular poets and stage entertainers. Such analysis of the historical sources of recitation offers a regretful glance into the lost art of the Australian poetry and sheds light on some of the ways in which poetry was disenfranchised by modern popular culture and new communication technologies.
