Abstract

The strategy employed to reduce fouling, characterization of the resulting polymers and data from the testing of the improved perfluoropolyethers (PFPE) formulation in both in vitro and in vivo was analyzed. PFPE porous membranes were prepared by photo-copolymerization of the PFPE macromonomer with a zwitterionic comonomer dispersed in microemulsion. The higher levels of zwitterionic comonomer were shown to reduce fouling of the membrane in vivo. It was observed that PFPEs prepared with high zwitterionic comonomer levels have hydrogen-like properties can be hydrated quickly by simply placing them in water.
