I am dancing on the courts : masculinities in Brazilian sports

Research output: Chapter in Book / Conference PaperChapter

Abstract

As Knijnik and Adair argued in Chapter 1, masculinity is a very complex and multifaceted concept. Despite such varied ideas and heterogeneous approaches to masculinity, there is one issue that remains constant: the strong relationship between sports and masculinity. Brazil provides an intriguing sociocultural context for research of this kind. First, discourses about masculinity in Brazilian sport have been hidden from public discussion for many years; it is a subject without debate. Yet the tensions are very real. Second, Brazil will be hosting two major sports events in the forthcoming years (FIFA World Cup, 2014; Rio de Janeiro Olympic Summer Games, 2016) and they will both bring attention to the Brazilian sports scene, providing global inputs to the discussion of gender norms.
