Abstract
The rising concerns amongst governments and countries (especially, but not exclusively, in the developed economies) about environmental problems and in particular climate change, has created an official interest and in some cases actions to provide national responses that are designed to reduce greenhouse emissions and lower national and individual carbon foot prints. This paper argues that an important part of such responses is the creation of a range of new or restructured jobs and tasks that have been labelled 'green jobs' or 'green collar jobs'. This paper poses the question of whether such green jobs can create employment sustainability for those employees who undertake them. An important finding is that the particular nature of the identified green job creates different answers to this question in short, whether identified green jobs provide employment which itself is sustainable, is determined by the type of work needed to be performed. A second finding is that whether specific green jobs do or do not lead to employment sustainability, employees need to engage in life-long learning to remain employable.
