Abstract
![CDATA[I was a professional researcher for 13 years before I started my PhD in Australia. So, much of what I am going to discuss relates to the period before I joined a university—when I worked for large international non-governmental organisations (INGOs) doing research in post-conflict countries. During that period, I worked outside of Australia in the humanitarian mine action sector as well as the primary health care and HIV/AIDS prevention sectors. I started out as a volunteer, working with the Lao national HIV/AIDS prevention programme, then worked with CARE Laos and a local Non-Government Organisation (NGO) called CHAMPA.]]
