Abstract

This paper draws together current research relating to the impacts of meth/amphetamine, other drugs and alcohol use in rural and remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in northern and northeast Queensland. It aims to address the following questions: What evidence is there that meth/amphetamine, in particular crystal meth/amphetamine (‘ice’), is being used in these communities? What are the behaviours, symptoms and signs of meth/amphetamine use that service providers observe in these regions? If ‘ice’ is being used, who is using it and what are the impacts? The paper also provides recommendations to the Queensland Government aimed at preventing any future increase in ‘ice’ usage in this region.
