Abstract

![CDATA[This chapter explains the fundamental operation of the cochlea, the biological inspiration used in the implementation of cochlear implants and the constraints imposed on designs when creating biohybrid hearing systems. Also discussed are the challenges faced by present and future cochlear implants and areas of future research. Other types of hearing prostheses are also found, such as bone-anchored hearing aids, middle-ear implants, and brainstem stimulators; however, we shall focus our attention on the cochlear implant, which is the most widely used device.]]
