Abstract

Care of the older cancer population is complex and challenging. Older adults are underrepresented in clinical trials, which drive oncology treatment. Older patients may have diminished physiological reserve and geriatric syndromes that may impact on oncology management. Lung cancer management is further complicated by prevalence of comorbidity. Geriatric screening, assessment, and guided interventions reduces treatment toxicity, and improves quality of life and health care delivery in older patients. International societies recommend geriatric screening for older patients with cancer. Despite this, geriatric screening and assessment has not been widely adopted, varying from 17 to 29% amongst oncologists. The aim of this study was to implement and evaluate a geriatric oncology model of care (GOMOC) for older patients with lung cancer.
