Improving the motivation and attitudes of boys in upper primary school through the use of student directed learning : an action research report

    Abstract

![CDATA[This paper reports upon an action research project focussed upon improving the motivation and attitudes of boys in a primary school setting through the integration of a variety of technologies within the context of the participants' lives. Participants took part in a series of student directed activities and a series of focus group discussions. Student observations, journals and discussions were analysed, resulting in the suggestion that although incorporation of various technologies does serve to increase the motivation of boys, the added incorporation of physical and social activities may be stronger motivators. This paper argues that positioning the teacher as facilitator rather than a conveyer of knowledge does increase motivation and improve attitudes toward learning due to increased levels of autonomy, serving to further empower students.]]
