Abstract

Growing awareness of managing construction and demolition (C&D) waste has led to its development in construction project management. In 2003, the Hong Kong Government implemented a waste management plan (WMP) for all construction projects. The trial period showed that WMP affects companies’ productivity. Its implementation was investigated through a survey and structured interviews. The main benefi ts were found to be the on- site reuse of materials and methods for reducing waste. Financial incentives and costs present major diffi culties and the use of prefabricated building components was considered as the most effective measure in encouraging the implementation of WMP.
