    Abstract

![CDATA[The complex interaction between molten high chromium white cast iron and a mild steel substrate was studied. Confocal laser scanning microscopy permitted in situ imaging of the reacting phases while X-ray compositional mapping was used after the heat treatment to analyse the diffusion and partitioning of alloying elements. The experimental data were also compared to results obtained by numerical simulation. Application of these techniques has resolved the mechanism of the interaction.]]
