Abstract

As a fast setting and air-hardening green cementitious material, magnesium oxychloride cement (MOC) has attracted lots of research interest. The low energy consumption and good bonding to varieties of urban refuses and industrial by-products make MOC an environmental friendly material with potential in various applications. However, the main hydration phases of MOC are instable after prolonged exposure to water, and the poor water resistance of MOC restricts its application in civil engineering. In this paper, prior to the study of the effect of silica fume on the water resistance of MOC, the influences of silica fume on the physical and mechanical properties of MOC such as fluidity, setting time, compressive strength, flexural strength and Young's modulus are investigated. The test results and research findings are reported in this paper.
