Abstract
IN/SITE is a photographic exploration of underground and irregular spaces, capturing experiences of transient venues that sit outside formal urban frameworks. The images explore covert and evasive places; temporary refuges for creativity carved out of the city amidst the push of gentrification and development. A record of evolution, reinvention and devolution, these photographs offer an interpretation of the city’s messages and secrets. The physical presence of bodies is implied, but it is the play of light and shadow that populates and activates these images of empty spaces. The continuum between light and dark becomes symbolic of the shifting, transformative, and ephemeral nature of the underground spaces explored in the work. The exhibition delves into the personal experiences, connections and intricate associations that exist within marginal spaces, and the ability of photography, as an extension of the artist’s own presence in this hidden world, to capture them.
