Abstract

Sex selection, a manifestation of social inequality and discrimination that has persisted for decades in India, needs to be, therefore, examined in a larger political economic context that includes honor killings, property rights, state policies like the two child norm and others. Further existing and 'newer' technologies and the global nature of this industry have only expanded possibilities of selection of sex and other characteristics. In such a milieu where gender, the ideology of son preference, technology markets intersect, the possible factors contributing to improved sex ratio (as per the Census 2011, in Punjab) becomes critical.
