Abstract
![CDATA[Intolerance of uncertainty (IU) is the tendency to interpret ambiguous situations as negative. IU is often measured using the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale (IUS). This chapter shows evidence that IU is a key feature of drug addiction. We discuss several studies showing how IU relates to different symptoms of drug abuse. Specifically, we show how IU relates to susceptibility to addiction, development and contribution to relapse. Further, we discuss several studies on how IU relates to contextual cues, working memory, and impulsivity in patients with addiction. Understanding these associations are important as it may provide new avenues for more effective treatment of substance use and prevention of relapse.]]
