Abstract
How are violence, desire, and the sacred related? Is this just a random association or does anything really unite these themes? According to René Girard, sacrifice and scapegoating are the pivotal institutions and mechanisms through which violence, desire, and the sacred are inextricably linked" but what does this claim mean exactly and what does it entail? The chapters collected in this volume explore answers to these questions. They explore in particular the connection between scapegoating and two different meanings of sacrifice.
