Abstract
Filipino scholar and composer José Maceda notes the metaphysical nature that underpins Southeast Asian music of the Pacific, but also grounds the sound in the physicality of place. The composer-scholar perspective interacting with the performer and educationalist is taken as the basis for this study, which embraces an Asian-Pacific identity aspect, relegating the paradigm of contemporary Western art music as a largely European-driven culture.
