Abstract

The construction industry is plagued by various challenges stemming from the resistance to change and the stagnation of its existing traditional practices. As the industry prepares for significant expansion, a large-scale transformation is not only expected but also required to alter the way projects are developed, delivered, and operated. Such a transformation will unlock various industry capabilities ranging from advanced technology implementation to enhanced processes and an empowered workforce. Thus, this chapter aims to explore digital transformation in the construction industry, as it allows researchers as well as practitioners to differentiate it from digitization and digitalization, delve into the technologies driving this transformation, and identify associated benefits and challenges. The chapter also proposes a framework for construction organizations to develop and implement digital transformation strategy. Findings of the chapter serve as a foundational guide, as it reemphasizes the urgency for change and offers a roadmap for digital transformation in the construction industry.
