Abstract
The idea of this themed issue emerged during the AAG meeting of 2016 in San Francisco where we coincided at the session “Solidarity Economy Post-Capitalist Practices and the Geographies of Exclusion and Marginalization.” Some of us had previously met at a Relational Poverty Network (RPN) meeting in Seattle in 2014. The meeting reflected on the work already underway to push back against dominant framings of poverty and discussed counter-narratives about “poverty” and “the poor” that could provide for a coherent set of theoretical and methodological tools for novel and radical approaches to the problem. The AAGs session in San Francisco meant to further explore the theoretical congruencies between the RPN poverty research agenda and the solidarity economy movement, as well as to reflect on how the theoretical, political and practical commitments of the RPN might be extend by considering the solidarity economy as a social, political and theoretical movement.
