Abstract
The history of Australia's Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) Television is understood by shifting attention from notions of origins and derivation to notions of invention and translation. The idea of multicultural television is invented, and investigated to understand the complexities and the complicated decisions taken in the early days of SBS TV, which had more to do with exploring and extending the possibilities of the television medium than with the social policy of multiculturalism.
