    Abstract

Health-related quality of life has been an important topic of research in diverse fields such as medicine, nursing, community service provision and psychology. Moreover, the impact of psychological variables on health-related quality of life has recently been more widely recognised and investigated. Despite this wider recognition, little research has investigated the relationship between self-concept and health-related quality of life. This study broaches the question of how we might begin to investigate the relationship between self-concept and health-related quality of life, specifically the relationship between self-concept, physical health and generalised psychological wellbeing. The study proposes specific ways in which self-concept may relate to physical health and psychological wellbeing, and offers a working model of potential relationships between self-concept and physical and psychological wellbeing. The study also assesses the content validity of various measures of physical health and psychological wellbeing in order to establish a measurement framework demonstrating how physical health and psychological wellbeing may be empirically investigated in relation to recognised measures of self-concept.
