Abstract
The study examined the influence that information- (babble) and energetic- (white noise) maskers had on speech production (compared to speech produced in quiet). The aim was to determine whether talkers in noise adopt a strategy of producing more discriminable vowels with greater consistency. This was examined in the auditory domain by measuring vowel space dispersion and consonant and vowel duration, with production consistency determined by measuring correlations across repeated tokens. In the visual domain, 3D face and head motion data were recorded and Principal Component Analysis conducted on motion components to determine if visual speech in noise is more consistent. No support was found for the proposal that talkers produce more distinct/consistent productions in noise compared to in quiet.
