Islam-West relations and the rise of Muslim radicalism and global jihadism

Research output: Chapter in Book / Conference PaperChapter

Abstract

Muslim radicalism and global jihadism are borne out of a negative and destructive Muslim experience of Islam-West interaction. They are the consequences of past European colonial rule, expressions of the crisis of modernity and identity, and reflect a deep pervasive disenchantment and disillusionment with a material modernity. We argue in this chapter that Muslim radicalism and global jihadism are a reaction to the consequences of European colonialism and the way the West through its international relations and foreign policies presently treats Muslim nation-states and their impact on ordinary Muslims in the broader society.
