N2 - A descriptive qualitative study was undertaken to explore students’ experiences of using an annotated exemplar to support the completion of an essay assessment task. Using a stratified sampling approach to recruit a diverse sample based on use of the exemplar, 12 participants were interviewed. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis. The COREQ checklist guided reporting. Most participants used the annotated exemplar to assist them in completing their assessment task. They used the annotated exemplar as a blueprint to structure their essay, develop their writing, and to check they were on the right track. The purpose-built annotated exemplar with meta-language support was a useful tool to assist students with the assessment task. Uptake of this tool could be improved by engaging both academic staff and students to optimize student use.
