Abstract

The Sex Industry is a diverse industry that attracts much attention in society. Research in this area tends to be based on the analysis of prevalence data obtained through large population surveys or sexual health clinic settings, rather than on in-depth examinations of specific behavior. Although a great deal of research has been carried out regarding the 'supply' within the Sex Industry, very limited to none has attempted to address the 'demand' side (clients who purchase sex). Therefore, this study closely looks into this new territory of 'demand' in this industry and aims to identify specific characteristics that men who purchase sex from female sex workers in NSW, identify with and their motivations. The project also examines childhood and adolescent experiences, safety issues, health concerns, condom use, sexual behaviors, services offered, family and personal beliefs, and public and societal perceptions. The impact of legislation and policy on the process of decision-making among this group of men is also further investigated. This project was funded by SWOP (Sex Worker Outreach Project) and conducted by Philip Birch.
